Date: April 10, 2012One of the most popular shows on television today is The Office, a sitcom about a particularly inept boss and his impact on coworkers. The humour strikes a chord with so many viewers because most of us have had the unfortunate experience of working for a bad boss. They come in all shapes and sizes. However, it is one thing to have a manager who lacks skill or knowledge and it can be quite another to have a boss who has a high level of "technical capability" and at the same time is interpersonally incompetent - what can be described as an "abrasive leader". Such leaders, although they have valuable experience or expertise often cause both reduced performance and suffering in the workplace, not only for others, but for themselves.
At Black Tusk, our goal is to help leaders achieve personal excellence and create environments around them in which others can perform with excellence. Sometimes we work with bright and productive leaders whose behavior, unwittingly, creates an environment that detracts from the performance of others. While there has been much written to support those on the receiving end of abrasive leadership, there has been very little in the way of understanding and working with that abrasive leader.
In her doctoral program at Saybrook University in San Francisco, Lynn Harrison, a coach/OD consultant and one of the principals at Black Tusk, has been researching this complex phenomenon. At the April 10th chapter meeting, she will share both the findings about the causes of workplace abrasion and the concrete actions that can be taken via coaching to not only address the negative behavior but even turn abrasive leaders into impressive leaders.
In this interactive session, you will have the opportunity to:
• Gain insight into the antecedents and consequences of abrasive leadership behavior
• Learn about the distinctions between "tough bosses", abrasive managers, and bullies in the workplace
• See a step-by-step coaching process that can support the rehabilitation of these leaders
• Observe how coaching abrasive leaders is different from other types of coaching
• Learn about the challenges and rewards of working with this coaching population
