Talking about Training

Let's share some of our experiences around training.

There are so many schools out there now for a wide variety of learning. There are a few popular larger schools, on-line training, local, international, executive, life, leadership, relationship.  It's hard to know where to begin.

Great idea, Daniel.  My own training was at Royal Roads and I was (and still am) very happy with how that program was designed and has developed.  I think that's a key criteria with training programs.  Do they evolve and improve as the profession evolves and improves?  I'm not a big fan of programs that simply invite conformity to a formula.  I want to study with teachers who are first and foremost learners themselves.  That means both teachers and students are equally valued members of a learning community and the program should grow accordingly.  Having said that, I do have a core chart (there's that jazz stuff again!!) for what good training programs should pay attention to in helping people hone their skills in provoking great coaching conversations.  It takes the form of my latest acronym for COACH - Compelling Questions, Observant Listening, Appreciative Path Finding, Catalytic Improvement, and Heightened Collaboration.  If the training program you are considering does not pay attention in some significant way to all five of these elements, I don't think it has the depth and breadth to form great coaches.  Hope those reflections help and provoke some further dialogue.

Cheers,

Brian Fraser, Jazzthink
