Organisational and Leadership Coaching Book Club
In order to serve the corporate and business coach population of the ICF Vancouver chapter, we have created an Organisational and Leadership Book Club discussion group. This group is designed for certified coaches with corporate or organisational experience who are interested in discussing the paper or book in more detail. Research tells us that the best way to remember new ideas and put them into action is to share our thoughts and ideas with others. It is run by volunteer facilitators, so please join me in extending our thanks to them for making this series possible.
Participants will:
- Engage in powerful learning conversations
- Invest in their own professional development
- Clarify their thinking
- Challenge their assumptions
- connect with like-minded professionals
Do you have a book you have been intending to read, but need to make it a priority to finish it? Then we would love to have you as a facilitator. It's easy.
Step 1.
Choose the reading, meeting time and location.
Step 2.
Chose a few questions to get the participants thinking (see a few samples below). Distribute beforehand if you wish.
Sample questions for facilitators
1. What was your favourite quote/line/paragraph from the book? 2. What idea shifted your thinking? 3. Tell us about your "aha" moment. 4. What surprised you the most? 5. What was helpful to you? Why? 6. What did you find confusing? 7. Would you recommend this book to others? Why or Why not? 8. What were your favourite chapters? Why? 9. What was one of your most insightful moments? 10. If you had a chance to meet the author what questions would you ask? 11. How does this book compare with your actual experience? 12. What points do you strongly agree with? 13. What points do you strongly disagree with? 14. Share one of the take-a-ways you will remember most from this book 15. Which principles/ideas/recommendations have you implemented?
Step 3.
Inform Cheryl of your decision and she will post it for the ICF Vancouver chapter. Feel free to invite coaches from other realms as well.
Any questions?

TITLE: Why coaching clients give up, by Marshall Goldsmith
http://www.marshallgoldsmithlibrary.com/cim/articles_display.php?aid=117
One of the biggest mistakes in all of leadership development is the roll-out of programs and initiatives with the promise that "this will make you better". A classic example is the performance appraisal process. Many companies change their performance appraisal forms on a regular basis. How much good does this usually do? None! These appraisal form changes just confuse leaders and are seen as annual exercises in futility. What companies don't want to face is the real problem - it is seldom the form - the real problem is the managers who lack either the courage or the discipline to make the appraisal process work. The problem with the "this will make you better" approach is that the emphasis is on the "this" and not the "you". Coaching clients need to understand that ultimately only you can make you better.
A review of research on goal-setting has helped us better understand two key areas of concern for leadership coaches: 1) Why some people give up on goals and 2) How effective goal-setting can help ensure long-term goal achievement.
Questions for our discussion:
1. How does Marshall's perspective compare with your actual experience with leadership coaching? What points do you agree/disagree with?
2. How might this be useful in your practice?
3. If you had a chance to meet the author what questions would you ask?

Sue, Cheryl, this sounds interesting.
I'm registered on this website, but I'm not an ICF. May I participate?
